The sum behind the number
Engagement rate here means the average likes plus comments on a post, divided by your follower count, shown as a percentage. Counting several posts, ideally your last nine, smooths out the one photo that did unusually well or badly. If you leave the posts box empty the tool treats your totals as a single post.
Some people also add saves and shares, which Instagram shows in Insights. Those are worth watching, but they are private to you, so anyone judging your profile from the outside only ever sees likes and comments. That is why we stick to the public figures.
Reading your result honestly
Rough bands we use when we look at accounts: under 1% is quiet, 1–3% is ordinary, 3–6% is healthy and anything above that is lively for the size. Small accounts nearly always score higher than large ones, simply because friends and regulars make up a bigger share of a small audience.
A low score is not a verdict on your content. It often just means a chunk of your followers stopped opening the app. A clear-out of long-dead accounts you follow back, and a few posts made for the people who do respond, will usually move it.
How bought followers change the maths
Followers delivered by a pack add to the bottom half of the sum but rarely to the top, so a big follower order lowers your rate. That is the main reason we suggest modest sizes and often a likes pack alongside: 1,000 followers on an account with posts sitting at 30 likes is a gap people notice.
If you plan to work with brands, check your rate before and after any order and keep the two in a sensible ratio. Our guide to spotting fake followers explains what agencies look for, and the sponsored post calculator shows how the rate feeds into fees.
Three quick ways to lift it
- Ask a real question in the caption, one people can answer in a word or two.
- Reply to every comment in the first hour; replies count, and they bring people back.
- Post when your followers are awake, which Insights shows under the audience tab. For most UK accounts that is early evening.

Engagement checker questions
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
For most UK accounts between 1,000 and 10,000 followers, 2–5% is a comfortable place to be. Under 1% suggests a lot of followers have gone quiet.
Should I count reels as well as photos?
Yes, count whatever you posted to the grid. Reels often pull more likes, so mixing formats gives a fairer average.
Does this tool see my account?
No. It only uses the numbers you type in and does the sum in your browser. Nothing is stored or sent.
Why did my rate drop after I gained followers?
Your follower count rose faster than your likes and comments did. That is normal after any growth spurt; it settles as new posts reach the bigger audience.
